Wireless Communication
SSi has a long history of working with wireless products. In March of 2004, SSi began offering high-speed wireless Internet to customers in Yellowknife. This technology was the first of its kind in Canada. It’s also proven to be a huge success. Today, we provide reliable, high-quality Internet in over 50 communities in Nunavut and the NWT using the same technology. In Nunavut, customers use what is known as the QINIQ network while in the NWT, customers are on SSi’s Airware network.
How we do it

In our satellite system, a wireless signal is sent throughout a community by hardware known as Base Stations. To receive the signal from the Base Station, customers use modems known as Residential Subscriber Units.
This Base Station and RSU modem system has numerous advantages. When needed, more Base Stations can be added to meet a community’s demand for broadband. As well, the system’s Base Stations are self-contained, which minimizes maintenance costs. Also, our modems can be used in just about any community across the NWT or Nunavut. The modems are non-line of sight and work as soon as they’re plugged into a computer.
Case Study
In March 2004, we rolled out a wireless broadband network, never before seen in Canada. Instead of using physical connections such as cable or DSL, the service was delivered by satellite through modems that work anywhere in Yellowknife. If an SSi customer in Yellowknife had his network modem, a computer and a power supply, he could get online.
The pre-cursor of SSi’s QINIQ network, our Yellowknife network improved life significantly for many residents and businesses. Speaking at the network launch, then NWT Premier Joe Handley said the new service would help businesses "compete on an equal footing with people all over the world." Based on the feedback we receive every week, it looks like Joe was right.
Why SSi?
SSi has a long history of working with wireless products. Since 1996 we have been utilizing wireless technology in one form or another. Initially, when the technology was in its infancy our focus was on simple point-to-point links for our larger clients. As our wireless experience evolved and product lines improved, we began using this technology as a primary means to connect with our clients.
In March of 2004, SSi began offering High Speed Wireless Internet to customers in Yellowknife. The deployment of this technology was the first of its kind in Canada, and has proven to be a huge success. All told, we service approximately 60 communities using wireless broadband.
