Kativik Regional Government Satellite Network
Northern Quebec, Canada
In 2001 SSi designed and deployed a 14 site satellite network for the Kativik Regional Government (KRG) in Nunavik, Canada.
The first site was implemented in Kuujjuaq on a pilot basis. KRG brought in consultants and industry professionals to evaluate and audit the network and from our design a RFP was put out to bid on the remaining 13 sites. SSI won this bid and completed the remaining sites within a short time frame.
SSi deployed the network utilizing TDMA technology which provided the users of this network with heretofore unheard of functionality, including, shared space segment, dynamic bandwidth allocation, capability to transport data, voice and video traffic, bandwidth on demand and Full QoS.
The climate posed specific challenges to our technical and logistics team including; working in high winds, sub zero temperatures and short hours of daylight. With flight delays due to extreme weather, limited freight options and limited accommodations, building this network provided SSi with a host of challenges.
This network was designed to be fully scalable and at the time of its deployment was state of the art. Today, KRG manages the support and maintenance of the site internally. They have added Wireless Broadband services to their list of service offerings throughout Nunavik, demonstrating that even today their network is leading edge and continues to grown to meet their ever changing needs.
TDMA Network; Each site can be dynamically allocated bandwidth as
required. This bandwidth comes out of a communal “bandwidth cloud.”
Bandwidth is directed where it is needed most, while retaining full QoS
(Quality of Service.)
